Dyson, widely renowned for its high-end vacuum cleaners, released the Supersonic Hair Dryer in 2016. The first thing you probably noticed was how futuristic and sleek it looked compared to other hair dryers. The second thing you’ve likely picked up on? It has a price tag like no other hair dryer on the street at $399.99 (or $349.99 for just one color option on Amazon). If you’re like us, you undoubtedly questioned whether or not its features were worth the price tag.
After four years of wondering if the Dyson Supersonic was worth the price, we finally made the purchase. One of us hasn’t been able to have her regular salon blowouts due to the epidemic. The holidays are quickly approaching, so we figured now would be a good time to try it and see if it’s something we’d want to treat ourselves to or give as a present.
Let’s begin with a brief background on developing this ingenious hair device: To create the Dyson Supersonic, 103 engineers spent four years developing cutting-edge technologies. Regular hair dryer usage will keep your strands healthy and shining because it checks the air temperature forty times per second (per second!).
Dyson claims that using their product can boost smoothness by 75%, shine by 132%, and frizz and flyaways control by up to 61%. Plus, it claims to be the market’s quickest dryer thanks to a little engine that operates six times faster than regular hair dryers.
That being said, what does this mean in real life?
To put it another way, the Dyson Supersonic is a hair dryer that has ruined us for all other hair dryers since it is incredibly powerful while still being ridiculously portable and quiet. We have converted to the faith of Dyson and proudly call ourselves Dysonites.
Three of us, each with a distinct hair type (I have curly, fine hair; she has 4b curls and wears extensions; he has wavy-to-curly, thick, dry hair), can verify that this Dyson reduced drying time considerably across the board. It took a quarter of the time it usually would have. Impressively, even in its hottest setting, we never felt any burnt skin or hair from the tool’s airflow. Yet, it nevertheless dried our hair in a short span of time. It wasn’t until we dried half our hair with the Dyson and the other half with a regular hair dryer that we realized the difference.
The ordinary hair dryer made our fingers feel like they were on fire. Suppose you have a sensitive scalp and only want to lower the temperature at certain places. In that case, you can do so quickly, thanks to the four temperature options (along with the essential cool blow to establish your style) and three speed options. And it’s quieter than the standard hair dryers we’ve used; one of us used it while talking to our parents on FaceTime, and she didn’t even mind. The future has arrived!
Air Multiplier technology generates a high-velocity, high-pressure air stream for the device. The Supersonic has a few magnetic attachments to help you achieve a more tailored look: It has a diffuser for shaping curls and waves, a toning nozzle, and a styling concentrator for directing the airflow. You can add a wide-tooth comb attachment (great for wavy or curly hair) or a gentle air attachment (for straight hair) to your order at no extra cost (fantastic for fine hair and delicate scalps). The Supersonic is offered in six stylish colors, including two limited-edition gift sets, and is covered by a two-year guarantee.
One of us, who admittedly had never properly straightened her curly hair before, could do it with the help of the Supersonic and only her hands (no brush!). The result was hair that was visibly smoother, fuller, and shinier. In our tests, those with curly hair found that drying our hair in small portions took only one pass, and the resulting volume and body were superior to anything we’d experienced with a conventional blow dryer.
Without the broad comb attachment, our curly-haired tester declared she would never use a hair dryer again with extensions. Still, with it, her hair dried swiftly and felt incredibly soft with just a few passes.
The Dyson Supersonic is, in our opinion, a worthy purchase if you frequently blow-dry your hair and/or are searching for a tool that will allow you to achieve a salon-quality blowout in record time. Who wouldn’t want to save an hour a week on their hair care routine while protecting their hair from heat? Its compact build and versatile attachments make it a breeze for various hair types.
The Supersonic is a great present for the person in your life who is always trying out new hairstyles. Maybe it’s time you gave yourself something pleasant to celebrate making it to 2022.
